The US Virgin Islands Etymology

 

The US Virgin Islands were named by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage to the Americas in 1493. Columbus named the islands Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Virgenes (St. Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins) in honor of St. Ursula and the Christian martyrs she is said to have led. Over time, the name was shortened to the Virgin Islands.

Running Returns to the Virgin Islands

Calling all runners!  After a pandemic induced hiatus, running events are finally returning to the VI.  Races are wonderful outlets for health and wellness in the local community. They foster movement and exercise in a sport that is accessible for all levels and all ages – all you need are your own two feet and a good pair of shoes.   They are an excellent source of volunteer opportunities for local youth.  And they provide a platform for raising funds and awareness for community charities and organizations.  But they also serve to bring in tourist traffic as runners in the mainland dream of destination races in beautiful places and warmer climates over the fall and winter months.  Ready to get moving? Here’s what’s coming up in the VI:

St. ThomasThe Army 10 Miler Shadow Run and more!

The 3rd annual Army 10 Miler on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

On October 8th, the Saint Thomas Army Career Center Recruiting Team hosted the 3rd annual Army 10 Miler. The event was offered free of charge as a Shadow Run for the flagship Army 10 Miler race which is held annually in Washington, D.C.  Participants received t-shirts, finisher medals and awards for the top 3 finishers.  The 10-mile course took runners from the Havensight cruise dock to the Cyril E. King airport and back.  The event drew about 65 participants as it continues to grow each year.  Other 2022 Shadow Runs are being held at Army bases around the globe including Iraq, Romania, Honduras, Cuba, Djibouti, Italy and Turkey.

 St. CroixThe St. Croix Scenic 50

On January 15th, 2023, runners can take part in the St. Croix Scenic 50 which showcases the gorgeous island scenery of the largest island in the USVI.  This year’s race will offer a 50k individual and 50k relay option.  And if you’re wondering, 50 kilometers = 31.07 miles.  The course begins and ends at the beautiful Cane Bay beach. Runners will enjoy the breathtaking views of sunrise along the water of the north shore before heading into the trails and rolling hills leading up and over to the west-end shoreline. Offering a mix of road and trails, flats and hills, mountains and beach, this event has something for everyone.  What a great way to spend a 3-day holiday weekend in January!

The St. Croix Scenic 50

St. John8 Tuff Miles

The most well-known VI race to both locals and visitors alike is 8 Tuff Miles. The first 8 Tuff Miles footrace was held on Saturday, February 22, 1997 with 21 finishers. The largest participant pool was set in 2013 with 1,207 finishers. The stunning yet strenuous course runs from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay via Centerline Road for a total distance of 8.375 miles. Beginning and ending at sea level, runners will reach a peak elevation of 999 feet along the way. The views are arguably worth the elevation gain! The next race will be offered as a free community event on February 25th, 2023. The roads will be closed to traffic, but runners will need to run self-sustained with their own water. If you’re lucky you might even get to see the resident donkeys, pigs, and goats as you go. Start planning your trip today!

Carnival Time on St. Thomas 

It’s FINALLY that time of year again! After a 2-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the community couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the St. Thomas Carnival. Carnival is a yearly celebration of Virgin Island culture with a focus on delicious Caribbean cuisine, traditional music and spirited dancing. It is a time for Virgin Islanders to reconnect with family and friends, and celebrate!

The Food of Carnival 

The Food Fair is many islanders favorite event and one that we look forward to all year! A ton of local vendors showcase their specialities, so your taste buds are in for all the Caribbean staples that you can eat!

A few of our favorites: 

Fungi (pronounced foon-Ji) 

The Caribbean version of polenta. Delicious sweet fish is simmered in butter and onions and served alongside fungi- a creamy dumpling style heap of tender slated cornmeal.

Roti 

​An appetizing flatbread made with split peas incorporated into the dough. Roti is stuffed with a curried filling consisting of vegetables, potatoes and meat. Roti comes in many versions: beef, goat, chicken, or just veggies. Sure to please everyone from meat enthusiasts to vegetarians!

​Johnny Cake

A simple fried bread that will satisfy your sweet and salty craving! Johnny cakes can be served as a side or as a treat by itself. Johnny cakes are fluffy & slightly crispy. The key is to fry them in very hot oil so they start to cook immediately and do not absorb too much of the oil.

The Music of Carnival

The musical performances during Carnival highlight the various cultural influences of the Caribbean.  If you are a lover of live music, your ears are in for a week-long treat! 

A few of our favorites:

The Steel Drum 

The most commonly recognized sound of Caribbean music is the steel drum (also known as the steel pan which is believed to originate from Trinidad).  Steel drums have been used during festivals throughout the Caribbean since the 1780s. You won’t want to miss ‘Panorama’, held on the last evening of Carnival, where multiple steel drum troupes perform.  A local favorite is the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra.  Originally started as a summer project in 1981 to help students between the ages of 10 and 18 successfully complete their high school education, it became so successful that it was made into a year round program. The Rising Stars have performed in places as far away as Taiwan and Japan, as well as all over the Caribbean, and have even made appearances in movies such as Weekend at Bernie’s II and on such TV programs as Good Morning America and the Today Show.  

Soca

Soca music is defined as the “Soul of Calypso“, and has influences of African and East Indian rhythms. It originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s, and has evolved and developed throughout the Caribbean since then.  A highlight of the 2022 Carnival is a performance by prominent Soca group Kes The Band, known for their unique blend of soulful vocals, calypso inspired melodies, rock riffs and island beats, with hints of reggae.

Reggae

Reggae music started in Jamaica in the late 1960s and incorporates musical elements of rhythm and blues, jazz, calypso, and traditional African folk rhythms. Offbeat rhythm and a slower paced tempo make Reggae music uniquely recognizable.  The 2022 Carnival line-up offers a whole evening of Reggae performances, including the legendary Beres Hammond.

The Dancing of Carnival 

If you like to dance, J’ouvert might be the Carnival experience for you.  J’ouvert is a contraction of the French words jour ouvert, or dawn/day break, and is the official start of Carnival (typically held at dawn on the Monday preceding Lent). One of the most popular events of Carnival, it is an early morning party as thousands of people dance through the streets behind their favorite bands.  Expect paint, bright attire and a party atmosphere.

And there’s so much more to Carnival including children’s and adult parades, boat races, and events throughout the community.  Mark your calendars for the next St. Thomas Carnival held in late April/early May, plus the St. John Festival over the 4th of July, and the St. Croix Christmas Carnival held between Christmas and New Years. It’s one of the best ways to experience the true flavor of the VI!

Knowing what mortgage payment you can handle will also help you narrow the field so you don’t waste precious time touring homes that are out of your reach.

Where to Begin with Mortgage Debt

The key factor in figuring how much home you can afford is your debt-to-income ratio. This is the figure lenders use to determine how much mortgage debt you can handle, and thus the maximum loan amount you will be offered. The ratio is based on how much personal debt you are carrying in relation to how much you earn, and it’s expressed as a percentage.

The Ideal Debt-to-Income Ratio

Mortgage lenders generally use a ratio of 36 percent as the guideline for how high your debt-to-income ratio should be. A ratio above 36 percent is seen as risky, and the lender will likely either deny the loan or charge a higher interest rate. Another good guideline is that no more than 28 percent of your gross monthly income goes to housing expenses.

Doing the Math

First, figure out how much total debt you (and your spouse, if applicable) can carry with a 36 percent ratio. To do this, multiply your monthly gross income (your total income before taxes and other expenses such as health care) by .36. For example, if your gross income is $6,500:

$6,500 (Gross monthly income)
x .36 (Debt-to-income ratio)
= $2,340 (Total allowable monthly debt payments)

Next, add up all your family’s fixed monthly debt expenses, such as car payments, your minimum credit card payments, student loans and any other regular debt payments. (Include monthly child support, but not bills such as groceries or utilities.)

Minimum monthly credit card payments*: ____________
+ Monthly car loan payments: ____________
+ Other monthly debt payments: ____________
= Total monthly debt payments: ____________

*Your minimum credit card payment is not your total balance every month. It is your required minimum payment — usually between two and three percent of the outstanding balance.
To continue with the above example, let’s assume your total monthly debt payments come to $750. You would then subtract $750 from your total allowable monthly debt payments to calculate your maximum monthly mortgage payment:

$2,340 (Total allowable monthly debt payments)
$750 (Total monthly debt payments other than mortgage)
= $1,590 (Maximum mortgage payment)

In this example, the most you could afford for a home would be $1,590 per month. And keep in mind that this number includes private mortgage insurance, homeowner’s insurance and property taxes. To determine the price of home you can afford based on this amount, use a home affordability calculator.

Exceptions to the 36 percent rule

In regions with higher home prices, it may be hard to stay within the 36 percent guideline. There are lenders that allow a debt-to-income ratio as high as 45 percent. In addition, some mortgage programs, such as Federal Housing Authority mortgages and Veterans Administration mortgages, allow a ratio higher than 36 percent. But keep in mind that a higher ratio may increase your interest rate, so you may be better off in the long run with a less expensive home. It’s also important to try to pay down as much debt as possible before you begin looking for a mortgage, as that can help lower your debt-to-income ratio.

Finding the perfect place to rent on St. John can be a tad more challenging than renting on St. Thomas only because St. John is a smaller Island and since 2/3 of it is a protected national park.

St. John definitely has a mystical small town feel to it, where you can finally feel away from all the hustle and bustle of state side living. You will not find a huge shopping mall or retail store here! You will, however, be surrounded lush green valleys and hills most of which overlook dazzling turquoise water.

Sunsets At Secret Harbor

Over the hill, on the east side of St Thomas, nestled away in a beautiful cove is Secret Harbor. This little piece of heaven is a wonderful place to watch the sun go down or just watch the day go by. I have seen some spectacular sunsets there and it is always one of my favorite places to go. It’s the home of the Secret Harbor Beach Resort.

This beach is a great place to swim or snorkel or to sit and wait for the end of the day. There’s a dive shop and two restaurants there. The Cruzan Beach club offers a casual atmosphere while the Sunset Grille is a fine dining establishment with an upmarket flair.

Moving, Packing & Shipping to USVI

Moving, packing & shipping to the USVI is not the nightmare you might be imagining. Here at Sea Glass, we have all the tips and information on how to make your move to the USVI stress-free!

What about moving for seasonal or temporary USVI residents?

If you plan on being here for a couple of months or during the winter you do not need to move everything from your stateside home.  Most of the rental properties on the market are furnished or semi-furnished likewise, most of the homes on the market are furnished or semi-furnished.  We recommend packing up your personal belongings like clothes, linens, and of course items that have sentimental value. The climate here is tropical and open-air living is very common therefore, your stuff is exposed to the salt air and humidity which causes wear and tear faster. Before moving, consider having a yard sale. For the more important furnishings consider having a family member hold on to them or a climate-controlled storage unit.

Quick Tip!

Check with your airlines, sometimes it is cheaper when flying to the Virgin Islands to upgrade to first class which will have your bags checked in for free, rather than spending on baggage fees

How should I ship small items to the USVI?

We recommend using The US Postal Service- with flat rate priority shipping boxes in sizes small, medium, and large if it fits you can ship it! Use these to pack heavy dishes, books, tools, and pictures remember if it fits it ships.  Since the boxes are priority rated they arrive in a relatively timely manner.

How should I ship bigger items to the USVI?

For bigger items pack them on heavy-duty boxes or storage crates to ship them thru the post office. Postage cost will vary amongst states so check with your local post office. This is a great option if you do not have a household of stuff to ship. Each box can weigh no more than 70 pounds. These boxes do not ship priority, they ship standard post so expect them to take 3-6 weeks to arrive here in the VI.
